DRIJVENDE VLONDER

Tijdens de manifestatie "Art at the Pool" geïnitieerd door Iris Dik namens KoersNieuwWest als onderdeel van het Sloterplasfestival werd de Drijvende Vlonder gepresenteerd.
De Drijvende Vlonder is de eerste van een serie multifunctionele vlotten waar bewoners, festivals, scholen, bedrijven etc. rondom de Sloterplas gebruik van kunnen maken om een activiteit op te organiseren. Uiteenlopend van filmavonden, picknicken, chillen, theatervoorstellingen, workshops, muzikale performances etc.
De vlonder heeft een vloeroppervlak van 50 m2 en heeft een maximale capaciteit van 50 mensen. Geïnspireerd geraakt om een activiteit te organiseren, mail info@elmovermijs.com

FLOATING BRIDGE

During the manifestation "Art at the Pool" initiated by Iris Dik on behalf of KoersNieuwWest as part of the Sloterplasfestival the Floating Bridge was presented. The Floating Bridge is the first of a series multifunctional bridges which can be used by residents, festivals, schools, companies etc. around the Sloterplas and gives the possibility to organize an activity on. Diverse of film evenings, picnics, chilling, theatre shows, workshops, musical performances etc. The vlonder has a floor surface of 50 m2 and has a maximum capacity of 50 people. BEZINKBAKKEUKEN

Studio Elmo Vermijs realiseerde voor het project eetbaar landschap de Bezinkbakkeuken, een manifestatie gehouden op de voormalige waterzuivering Moerenburg te Tilburg. De Bezinkbakkeuken is een open keuken gebouwd in een van de voormalige bezinkbakken die uitzicht biedt op de naastgelegen rietvelden en waterzuiveringsinstallaties. Het paviljoen bied de mogelijkheid om met ca. 25 mensen gezamenlijk te koken en te eten. Tevens kunnen er workshops, lezingen, voordrachten en muzikale performances gehouden worden.

SETTLINGTANKKITCHEN

Studio Elmo Vermijs realised for the project edible landscape the Settlingtankkitchen, a manifestation on the former waterpurificationarea Moerenburg in Tilburg, the Netherlands. The Settlingtankkitchen is an open kitchen built in one of the former settlingtanks which offers a view on the cane-plantations and former water-purification installations. The pavilion offers the possibility to cook and eat with approx. 25 people. It also gives the possibilty to organize workshops, lectures,recitals and musical performances.

KASTBEELD

HET KASTBEELD is een ruimtelijke schets van oude veilingkisten, planken, balken en wiggen. De kisten worden op een constructieve manier ingezet om de kast stevigheid te geven. Daarnaast dienen ze als opslag en vervoersmiddel tijdens een verhuizing. Door het gebruik van tweedehands kisten en hout heeft het beeld een herkenbaarheid en geschiedenis alvorens de kijker het heeft kunnen aanschouwen.

CUPBOARDPIECE

THE CUPBOARDPIECE is a spacious sketch from old auction crates, boards, beams and wedges. To ensure the stability of the cupboard the crates are used in a constructive way. At the same time they have a storage and transport purpose when moving from one place to another. By using second-hand crates and wood the piece has a familiarity and history even before it is viewed.

BOUTENMOERTAFEL

DE BOUTENMOERTAFEL is ontworpen vanuit een constructieprincipe; een balk met daarin een draadeind gedraaid. Door dit principe toe te passen kon de tafel opgebouwd worden uit losse onderdelen die gemakkelijk te (de)monteren zijn. Het ontwerp van het tafeldblad verwijst op een speelse wijze naar de tweedehands kisten die worden gebruikt in het kastbeeld, de objecten gaan hierdoor niet alleen in materiaal maar ook in beeld zin een relatie met elkaar aan. De tafel voegt detail en gebaar samen tot een functioneel en ruimtelijk object.

BOLTANDNUTTABLE

THE BOLTANDNUTTABLE is designed out of one construction principle; a beam with a bolt screwed into it. This principle allows the table to be constructed from lose parts which are easily (de)assembled. The table top design playfully refers to the second-hand crates used in the cupboardpiece. In this way a relation between the objects is created not only in material but also visually.. The table unites detail and gesture in a functional and spacious object.

CUBUSLAMP

DE CUBUSLAMP is gemaakt van reststukken luifeldoek, klitteband, hout en met elkaar verbonden door middel van oranjekabel. Door ieder onderdeel van de lamp op een beeldende alswel constructieve manier te benaderen is een object ontstaan dat zich op het scheidingsvlak van ontwerp en beeldende kunst beweegt.

CUBELAMP

THE CUBELAMP is made from wast pieces of canvas, velcro, wood and joint through electricity cable. Approaching each part of the lamp expressively and constructively resulted in an object on the interface of design and visual arts.

KASTZITBEELD

Een beeld ontstaan vanuit de fascinatie voor hergebruik, mobiliteit en ruimte; bestaande uit een horizontaal en verticaal object die in het midden van de ruimte zijn geplaatst. Beide confronteren elkaar als wel de bezoeker in compositie, functie en materiaal. Het wekt de suggestie van een kast en zitgelegenheid en is tegelijkertijd een autonoom beeld. Doordat het gebouwd is van tweedehands kisten en hout draagt het beeld al een geschiedenis in zich alvorens de bezoeker het überhaupt heeft kunnen aanschouwen. Niet alleen de functie en context van de kisten en hout verandert, maar ook de positie die de gebruiker had en nu inneemt.

KASTZITBEELD

A piece originate from the fascination for re-use, mobility and space; existing out of a horizontal and vertical object which has been placed in the middle of the space. Both confront each other and the visitor in composition, function and material. It awakes the suggestion of a cupboard and bench and is at the same time an autonomous work. Because it is built of second-hand crates and wood the piece already has a history before the visitor had the possibility to observe it. Not only the function and context of the crates and wood changes, but also the position the user had and now takes.

KISTKAST

De Kistkast is ontstaan vanuit de fascinatie voor hergebruik, mobiliteit en ruimte. De kast bestaat uit een systeem van voormalige veilingkisten, planken, balken en wiggen. De veilingkisten dienen als opslag bij een verhuizing en is op een nieuwe locatie eenvoudig in elkaar te zetten. Door het gebruik van veilingkisten en tweedehands hout krijgt de kast een geschiedenis mee alvorens gebruikt te zijn.

CRATECUPBOARD

The Cratecupboard found its origin in the fascination for re-use, mobility and space. The cupboard exists from a system of former auction-crates, shelves, beams and wedges. The crates serve as storage while moving from one location to another and are put together easily. Through the use of auction-crates and second-hand wood the cupboard gets a history before it has been used.

VOLKSBOUWKEUKEN #2

De mobiele Volksbouwkeuken maakt het mogelijk te koken en te eten in voor het publiek, op het eerste gezicht, ontoegankelijke locaties. De Volksbouwkeuken bestaat uit een systeem van veilingkisten, balken en canvas en wordt door middel van planken, wiggen en spanbanden in elkaar gezet. De veilingkisten dienen tevens voor opslag van de kook- en etensmaterialen.
Passanten en genodigden worden uitgenodigd om met elkaar een maaltijd te bereiden en te nuttigen. Zo ontstaat er een tijdelijke ontmoetingsplaats in onbewoonde stedelijke locaties zoals bouwputten en leegstaande gebouwen.. De intentie is het contrast voelbaar te maken tussen het ruwe karakter van de locatie en het sociale van het samen gebruiken van de maaltijd. Anders gezegd, ontoegankelijke plaatsen worden voor even een publieke ontmoetingsruimte.

PEOPLESKITCHEN #2

The mobile Peopleskitchen makes it possible to cook and eat in inaccessible locations-at first sight-to the public. The Peopleskitchen exist from a system of wooden auctioncrates, beams and canvas. It is put together with shelfs, belts and wedges. The auctioncrates serve aswell as storage of the cook- and food material. People that pass by and invitees are invited to cook and consume a meal together. Thus there a temporary meetingplace in uninhabited urban locations arises such as construction locations, construction wells or empty buildings. The intention is to make contrast tangible between the harsh character of the location and it social of together dining. Differently said, inaccessible places become shortly a public meeting space.

EXTRAPOOLPAVILJOEN

Kunstenaarscollectief Extrapool uit Nijmegen nodigde Studio Elmo Vermijs uit om een paviljoen te ontwerpen waarin zij zich zouden presenteren gedurende de Kunstvlaai 2008, te Amsterdam.
Het paviljoen zou de mogelijkheid moeten bieden om drukwerk, boekjes en behang te presenteren en daarnaast verschillende geluidsperfomances te houden. Het paviljoen bestaat uit twee elementen. Een houten buiten constructie die door middel van houtverbindingen in elkaar wordt gezet. En aan de binnenkant van de houten constructie een doek dat naar buiten toe gespannen wordt door middel van band en klemgespen.
Door deze twee elementen aan het te koppelen wordt het paviljoen een geheel, zowel in uiterlijk als in de constructie. De openingen aan beide kanten dienen als in-en uitgang alswel een podium voor de performances.

EXTRAPOOLPAVILION

Artist-collective Extrapool from Nijmegen, the Netherlands invited Studio Elmo Vermijs to design a pavilion in which they would present themselves during the Kunstvlaai 2008 Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
The pavilion should offer the possibility to present printed paper, books and wallpaper and a stage where soundperformances could take place. The pavilion exists of two elements. A wooden outside construction which is put by means of wooden joints. And to the inside of wooden construction a cloth that it is stretched to outside by means of buckles and links. By coupling these two elements the pavilion becomes a whole, both in appearance and in the construction. The openings on both sides serve as entrance and exit aswell as a stage for the soundperformances.

BEHANG TENTOONSTELLING

Het CODA museum te Apeldoorn gaf de opdracht om een ruimtelijk ontwerp te maken voor een tentoonstelling over behang. Het gebouw ontworpen door Herman Hetzberger heeft hoge ronde plafonds met daartussen in traveen. Als inspiratie voor het ontwerp werd het principe van een behangtafel genomen: plank en schragen. Door deze te transformeren onstaat er een drager waarin de behangtafel duidelijk herkenbaar is en word de ruimtelijkheid van het gebouw gebruikt en benadrukt.

WALLPAPER EXHIBITION

The CODA museum in Apeldoorn commissioned an assignment to develop a spatial design for an exhibition about wallpaper. The building, designed by architect Herman Hetzberger, has high, round ceilings with spans in between.
Inspiration for the design was rooted in the structural principles of a wallpaper table: planks and trestles. By transforming these, a holder is created in which the wallpapertable is clearly recognizable and the spatial qualities of the building are used and emphasized.

VOLKSBOUWKEUKEN #1

De mobiele Volksbouwkeuken maakt het mogelijk te koken en te eten in voor het publiek, op het eerste gezicht, ontoegankelijke locaties. De Volksbouwkeuken bestaat uit een systeem van houten veilingkisten en wordt door middel van planken en wiggen in elkaar gezet. De veilingkisten dienen tevens voor opslag van de kook- en etensmaterialen. Passanten en genodigden worden uitgenodigd om met elkaar een maaltijd te bereiden en te nuttigen. Zo ontstaat er een tijdelijke ontmoetingsplaats in onbewoonde stedelijke locaties zoals bouwlocaties, bouwputten of leegstaande gebouwen. De intentie is het contrast voelbaar te maken tussen het ruwe karakter van de locatie en het sociale van het samen gebruiken van de maaltijd. Anders gezegd, ontoegankelijke plaatsen worden voor even een publieke ontmoetingsruimte.

PEOPLESKITCHEN #1

The mobile Peopleskitchen makes it possibly to cook and eat in locations inaccessible—at first sight—to the public. The Peopleskitchen consists of a system of wooden produce crates and is assembled with beams and wedges. The crates also serve to store the cook- and food materials. Passersby and invitees are welcomed to prepare and enjoy a meal together. Consequently, a temporary meeting place emerges in uninhabited urban locations such as construction sites, building excavations, or empty buildings. The intention is to make tangible the contrast between the rough character of the location and the social elements of eating together. In other words, for a moment inaccessible sites become public meeting places.

VERBINDINGSGANG

Het object werd tussen het oude en nieuwe gebouw van de Gerrit Rietveld Academie geplaatst, hierdoor ontstaat een verbinding tussen de gebouwen als wel de architecten. De maten van beide deuren en de afstand tussen beide gebouwen waren de uitgangspunten voor het ontwerp.
Het project speelt in op de individualisering en angst voor elkaar in de samenleving. Het gedrag van mensen in metrogangen is hiervan een typerend voorbeeld. Door de maatvoering, materiaalkeuze en vorm wordt veroorzaakt dat in de verbindingsgang de mensen met elkaar in contact komen op een onverwachte manier.

CONNECTINGCORRIDOR

The object was placed between the old and new building of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, thereby creating a connection between both buildings as well as both architects. The sizes of both doors and the distance between both buildings were the main starting points for the design. The project plays into the individualization and fear of one another in society. The behavior of people in underground subway places is a typical example. The chosen measurements, materials, and form causes people to unexpectedly run into one another.

KASTKISTEN

Met de kastkisten kunnen spullen worden vervoerd en kan een kast worden gebouwd. Na een verhuizing kunnen de deksels eraf worden gehaald en de kisten een kwartslag gedraaid.
Door de deksels tussen de kisten te leggen(op de handvaten) ontstaat er plank- en kastruimte. Om de kistconstructie licht te houden is er gekozen voor een binnenhoes die door touwen op spanning wordt gehouden.Tevens zorgt de binnenhoes ervoor dat de inhoud van de kist beschermd wordt.

CUPBOARDCRATES

With the “kastkisten” goods can be transported and a cupboard built. After moving, the covers can be removed and the crates turned 90 degrees.
By laying the covers between the crates (on the grips) a shelf and cupboard space is created. To keep the crate construction of light weight, an inside cloth was chosen that is fastened with ropes. The cloth has the additional benefit of protecting what is inside the crate.

BALANSSCHOEN

Gefascineerd door het begrip balans is een mime-speler uitgenodigd om zijn associaties uit te drukken. Na grondige analyse van zijn bewegingen, heb ik speciaal voor het naar balans zoeken en uit balans raken twee schoenen ontworpen. Deze twee schoenen stellen de gebruiker in staat aan den lijve te ondervinden.

BALANCESHOES

Fascinated by the concept of balance a mime player was invited to express his associations. After thorough analysis of his movements, I designed two shoes for searching and losing balance. These two shoes enable the user to experience this first-hand.

SCHAALSTOEL

“Stoel” van Yvonne Visser was het uitgangspunt van een onderzoek naar schaal. Als materiaal werd grijs karton gebruikt. De stoel werd in verschillende schalen uitgevoerd (waarbij de dikte van het karton gelijk bleef). Trapsgewijs veranderde de hoogte van 67 cm in 0,67cm. De schaalmodellen werden vervolgens gefotografeerd en afgedrukt op ogenschijnlijk dezelfde grootte. Daarnaast werden drie modellen (schaal 1:1 ) in hout uitgevoerd waardoor de invloed van schaal/materiaal zichtbaar wordt.

SCALECHAIR

"Chair" of Yvonne Visser was the starting point for a study into scale. The material used for the project was grey paperboard. The chair was executed in several scales: while the thickness of the paperboard remains unchanged, the heights gradually change from 67 cm to 0,67cm. The scale models were then photographed and printed such that they appeared to be the same size. In addition, three models (scale 1:1) were made of wood, whereby the impact of scale/material becomes apparent.

LICHTGANG

De deuren die aan beide uiteinde zitten, kunnen open en dicht worden gedaan waardoor er een bepaalde hoeveelheid licht in de gang valt. Door de specifieke ronding van de gang lijkt het licht aan de ene kant ver weg en aan de andere kant dichtbij. Ondanks dat de bezoekers elkaar niet kunnen zien, is het mogelijk door de hoeveelheid licht te variëren met elkaar te communiceren. De gang is 8 meter lang, 3 meter hoog en 50 cm breed. Je kunt er niet doorheen lopen, maar wel je hoofd in steken.

LIGHTCORRIDOR

The doors at both ends can be opened and closed. As a result of this, a certain amount of light falls into the corridor. Because of the specific round form of the corridor, it appears as if the light on one side is far away and on the other side nearby. Although visitors cannot see each other, it is possible to vary the amount of light so that they can communicate with each other. The corridor is 8 meters long, 3 meters high and 50 cm wide. You cannot walk through it, but it is possible to stick your head in.

KIWI CONSTRUCTIE

De kiwi was het uitgangpunt voor een onderzoek naar structuur van dit fruit. Door deze na te bouwen in karton en vervolgens te transformeren tot een plat patroon werd onderzocht of de structuur van een kiwi sterk genoeg is om mee te bouwen. Door de huid te onderzoeken en deze in het patroon te gebruiken kon een opzichzelfstaande ruimte geconstrueerd worden in de vorm van een kiwi.

KIWI CONSTRUCTION

The kiwi was the starting point for a study into the structure of this fruit. By reconstructing the kiwi with paperboard and transforming it into a flat pattern, the structure of a kiwi was examined for its strength as a building material. By examining the skin and using it in the structure, an autonomous space could be constructed in the form of a kiwi.
